Electric Vehicle Travel Guide to Olbrich Botanical Gardens
June 2026 found us eager to get out of town and spend a few days exploring the northern reaches of the American Midwest. We buzzed up U.S. Highway 63 into Rochester, Minnesota, to visit our son and catch a concert in Minneapolis before making the charge-friendly drive east to Madison, Wisconsin.
Following our "charge often, charge fast" EV road trip philosophy, we planned our lunch stop around charging rather than planning our charging around lunch. That strategy led us to the Pilot Flying J and Denny's in Mauston, Wisconsin, just off Interstate 90.
Begin the day with an 80% charge from the Circle K fast charger in Rochester.
The charger took us from 35% to 80% in about 12 minutes, just enough time for coffee and a donut
Drive a little more than two hours to Mauston and charge to 100% while enjoying lunch at Denny's inside the Pilot Flying J.
Since we planned to spend at least 30 minutes eating, topping off the battery made perfect sense.
Arrive in Madison with plenty of range remaining for several days of local exploration.
Before leaving town, recharge to 90% at the Electrify America station in the Walmart parking lot.
While charging, we stocked the cooler with supplies for the next leg of our journey toward Chicago.
After settling into our Airbnb, we met long-time friends for dinner and an evening of easy conversation.
Monday morning began with a long run exploring unfamiliar neighborhoods before we drove across town to check out one of Madison's most treasured attractions: Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

Outdoor Gardens
At Olbrich, visitors can explore 14 distinct outdoor garden spaces, including the Rose Garden, Herb Garden, Meadow Garden, and Serenity Garden. A map from the visitor center helps keep you oriented, but getting pleasantly lost among the flowers and winding pathways is part of the experience.
Just outside the information desk, free tram rides offer a guided introduction to the property. We chatted with fellow passengers while the driver rounded up the keys, and soon we were rolling along the main loop on a relaxing 30-minute tour.
For those who prefer to walk, the gardens are remarkably accessible, featuring paved paths, no stairs, and plenty of benches for resting and enjoying the scenery.
With a better understanding of the layout, we set off clockwise through the gardens.
One of the first features to catch our eye was a colorful kaleidoscope installation created with potted plants arranged in patterns that felt straight out of Alice in Wonderland. Every time I watch the shifting shapes and colors, I become convinced that some opium-addled scientist must have invented the concept.
The sunny afternoon carried us through the Event Garden and Moonlight Meadow before we arrived at the Autumn Garden, where a whimsical pinecone sculpture fashioned from shovel heads waits beside the path.
Continuing past the Serenity Garden, we crossed the bridge spanning Starkweather Creek and were rewarded with our first close-up view of Olbrich's crown jewel: the Royal Thai Pavilion.
Gifted by the Government of Thailand and approved by the Thai royal family, the pavilion is one of only four such structures located outside Thailand. Stretching nearly 40 feet long and assembled without a single nail or screw, the gold-leaf-adorned structure shines brilliantly against the Wisconsin landscape.
After lingering at the pavilion, we found relief from the afternoon sun beneath the leafy canopy of the Starkweather Creek Shade Garden.
As kayakers silently paddled along the creek, we cooled off before continuing through the Woodland Garden and on to the historic Sunken Garden, established in 1935. Its 80-foot reflecting pool perfectly frames views toward Lake Monona beyond.
After completing our leisurely journey across all 16 acres of outdoor gardens, it was time to head inside and lose ourselves in the tropical world of the Bolz Conservatory.
The Inside Garden
When it's time to head indoors, the Bolz Conservatory provides a year-round tropical escape complete with a waterfall, free-flying birds, colorful fish, and lush exotic plants.
Visitors will also find the gift shop and the Schumacher Library, which houses more than 3,500 horticulture-focused books. Educational programs and classes are offered throughout the year for visitors of all ages.
After paying the modest admission fee, we stepped inside the massive glass pyramid and were immediately greeted by tropical greenery, vibrant blooms, the sound of rushing water, and a sculpture that looked remarkably Chihuly-inspired to my untrained eye.
Take your time following the winding pathway through the conservatory. More than 650 tropical and subtropical plants fill the 50-foot-tall greenhouse, creating an immersive jungle experience in the middle of Wisconsin.
Be prepared to perspire. Temperatures generally range from 65 to 80 degrees, but on sunny days the conservatory can climb past 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmth feels like a perfect continuation of an afternoon spent exploring the outdoor gardens.
