Exploring Stark Caverns by EV: A Cool Underground Adventure Near Lake of the Ozarks

By now, you must realize that Cheryl and I like visiting caves. The otherworldly formations, connections to history, both ancient and modern, and the chance to cool down on a hot summer day are just a few of the reasons caves continue to tug at our adventure needle.

Luckily, Missouri offers plenty of underground experiences. Meramec Caverns may be the most barn roof advertised cave in America, but we recently found a cool retreat much closer to home.

To escape the summer heat, we headed to Stark Caverns near the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri.

The well-run, 70-minute guided tour took us past Prohibition-era moonshine stills, ancient bear beds, a wishing well, and even a few impressive fluorescent formations illuminated under black light.

Just a few miles north of the Lake of the Ozarks, Stark Caverns is an easy stop for travelers looking to explore one of Missouri's finest cave tours.

Stark Caverns: An Electric Vehicle Friendly Journey Through Missouri History

The story of Stark Caverns is almost as fascinating as the cave itself.

Charles and Elizabeth Stark homesteaded the property in 1859, using the cave for cattle shelter and cold food storage. Over the next 90 years, the cavern would serve a variety of purposes, including a hideout for Civil War guerrillas, a location for moonshine production during Prohibition, a dance hall, and even a short-lived roller-skating rink.

Opened to the public in 1950, Stark Caverns quickly became one of the Lake of the Ozarks area's most popular attractions.

One of the things I enjoyed most was learning how many different purposes the cave has served over the years. It's not often you tour a place that has sheltered cattle, hidden guerrillas, hosted moonshiners, and welcomed tourists for more than 75 years.

The tour balances those stories with just enough geology and cave history to keep things interesting without feeling like a classroom lecture.

Amp’d Advice: Wear proper walking shoes (not open toe footwear) — I've spent more than 10 years tackling day hikes and multi-day backpacking trips in Merrell Moab boots, a testament to their comfort and durability on the trail, in town or the cave floor.

Why EV Travelers Should Add Stark Caverns to Their Missouri Road Trip

Stark Caverns takes visitors on a journey through the ages as they explore remarkable geological formations, Native American artifacts, and evidence of prehistoric cave bears that once called the area home.

The tour also provides insight into the formation of the Ozark Plateau and showcases what guides describe as some of the largest stromatolite fossils in North America.

Stromatolites are layered rock structures formed by ancient microorganisms and represent some of Earth's oldest known forms of life. Even if geology is not your thing, learning how these ancient formations developed adds another layer of appreciation to the experience.

Keep your eyes open throughout the tour. Depending on conditions, visitors may occaKeep your eyes open throughout the walk underground. Depending on conditions, visitors may occasionally spot cave salamanders, crayfish, or even bats tucked away in darker sections of the cave.

We visited during the afternoon, and the tour was busy. If you're planning a trip during peak travel season, I strongly recommend reserving tickets online before arriving. Doing so helps secure your preferred tour time and avoids disappointment.

For those looking for something a little different, Stark Caverns offers specialty experiences as well.

The popular Black Light Tour reveals fluorescent minerals and formations not normally visible during the standard tour. Visitors looking for a challenge can also test their problem-solving skills in the on-site Escape Room. Both attractions require advance reservations, so be sure to check availability before your visit.

Whether you're a history buff, geology enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique family-friendly attraction near Lake of the Ozarks, Stark Cavernsoffers a memorable underground adventure.

SOooo, I hate water dripping on my glasses, on my bald spot, and down my back, so a cave visit almost always means a hat is coming along for the adventure.

Cheryl has another objective. While I'm trying to stay dry, she's trying to stay warm. Somehow her "cave jacket" magically appears every time we head underground, even on a 90-degree Missouri summer day.

  • I've picked up this hat in several colors over the years, making it easy to match whatever mood or outfit the day calls for.

  • Cheryl loves the soft fleece lining and comfortable hood that help take the chill out of those cooler cave temperatures.

Electric Vehicle Charging Near Stark Caverns and Lake of the Ozarks

One question many EV drivers ask when exploring rural attractions is simple: "Can I get there and back comfortably?"

The answer for Stark Caverns is a simple yes.

Because the cave is less than 40 miles from our home, Cheryl and I didn't need to think much about plugging in. Visitors coming from farther away, however, will find plenty of fast-charging infrastructure throughout central Missouri.

Approximately 40 minutes north along U.S. Highway 54, Jefferson City offers both ChargePoint stations and Tesla Superchargers.

Arriving from the south? Lebanon, Missouri, near the junction of Interstate 44 and Highway 5, hosts a reliable Electrify America site that makes a convenient stop before or after your cave adventure.

Drivers coming from western Missouri have several choices as well. Osceola offers SynergyEV, while Sedalia provides additional options through Francis Energy and RED E Charging.

Making Stark Caverns a side trip from the Lake of the Ozarks? Osage Beach offers convenient charging just 10 minutes south of the cave. Both ChargePoint and Noodoe stations are conveniently located near shopping, dining, and entertainment, making it easy to combine a quick top-off with other activities.

In short, charging concerns don't need to be part of your trip planning. With charging available from every direction, Stark Caverns is an easy destination for EV drivers exploring central Missouri.

Bird’s-Eye Review: A Must-Visit Missouri Cave Adventure for EV Travelers

"One Eye Willie" Cave Formation at Stark Caverns

Our guide, Sarah, provided an excellent tour. She was easy to understand, conscientious of the variety of people in our group, and possessed an impressive ability to walk backward while sharing stories and guiding visitors safely through the cavern. Her enthusiasm and knowledge brought the cave's history to life.

Not far from the sunshine and busy waterfronts of the Lake of the Ozarks, Stark Caverns offers a completely different perspective on the region. From ancient bear beds and Native American artifacts to stories of moonshiners and Civil War guerrillas, there's far more beneath the surface than many visitors realize.
