Missouri EV Road Tripping in the Year 2025

Over the past 12 months, I have driven around most of Missouri, and recharging has been as easy as checking the status of charging stations on my PlugShare app.

Cheryl and I have enjoyed concerts in Kirksville & St. Louis, the Wonders of Wildlife in Springfield, meeting friends in Hannibal, and I ran a half-marathon in Kansas City.

We have enjoyed a number of the 93 State Parks spread across the northern grasslands to the southern Ozarks. Visited a Civil War battlefield, some elephant rocks, and a century-old grist mill hidden among the landscape.

It is a great time to drive an electric car - with the exception of the middle southern part of Missouri, EV charging stations are available - follow our easy guide to successful EV road trip planning.

Metropolitan Missouri EV Charging Stations

Since we bought our EV in May 2022, the availability of public EV charging stations in Missouri's metropolitan areas has increased significantly.

Back then, St. Louis and Kansas City each had only one Electrify America charging station, which were often full. Meanwhile, Springfield and Columbia were mostly limited to Level 2 chargers located in grocery store parking lots.

By the spring of 2025, the situation has significantly improved, with each major metropolitan area now boasting multiple Level 3 chargers, improving support for EV drivers across the state.

The St. Louis metropolitan area now offers Electrify America chargers in St. Charles, St. Peters and the Chesterfield area, with a new one coming to the Ikea store parking lot.

  • Additionally, scattered ChargePoint, EVgo, and Francis Energy stations enhance the EV charging opportunities across the region.

Kansas City is a bit more challenging, as this area could really use more public charging stations.

  • I find the Peculiar Pilot Flying J EVgo to be a very reliable charging station.

  • Independence hosts the original Electrify America station, and luckily, there is another EA station near Country Club Plaza.

  • Blue Springs recently opened an Ionna 10 bay, covered charging station.

  • EVgo is also available near the KC International Airport, with a few stations in the state trying to steal the KC Chiefs.

Southwest Missouri’s Springfield comes humming in with ten Level 3 charging stations.

  • The famous Buc-ee’s provides EV charging stations along with a variety of culinary delights. Meanwhile, the Flying J Travel Center features an EVgo charging station, perfect for filling your vehicle while you empty.

  • Three EV charging stations are conveniently located just minutes from the stunning Wonders of Wildlife Museum. We recently used the easily accessible south side Signal Food Store ChargePoint.

Stephen’s College’s host, City of Columbia offers two high-speed EV charging stations.

  • The EVConnect on the east side of town and the new Rivian EV charging station on the west side of town.

Southeast Missouri’s Cape Girardeau provides easy access to four EV charging stations.

Northwest Missouri’s St. Joseph has a single ChargePoint station.

Rural Missouri EV Charging Stations

Amazingly, I have found most of rural Missouri a stress-free charging landscape.

Many smaller towns host a level 3 EV charging station, providing the freedom to charge every 60 to 100 miles.

  • I frequently visit friends in the Hannibal / Quincy area. The Hannibal Francis Energy EV charging location is clean with a bit of a walk to facilities.

  • Does the Grand Glaize Bridge make you eager for a visit? You'll be delighted to know the Lake of the Ozarks hosts two ChargePoint EV charging stations.

  • Visiting Northeast Missouri, I access ChargePoint & Francis Energy EV charging stations in Moberly, Macon, Kirksville, Chillicothe, Canton and Bowling Green.

  • Northwest Missouri does not beckon often, when in the area I access ChargePoint & Francis Energy EV charging stations in Bethany, Cameron, Maryville and Tarkio.

  • Roll Southwest to find EV charging stations in Sedalia, south of Warrensburg, Osceola, Bolivar, Nevada, Joplin & Branson.

  • South Central and Southeast Missouri have EV public charging stations in Cabool, Farmington, Ironton, Popular Bluff & Sikeston - these towns are spread out - making traveling here more challenging.

Highways & Bi-Ways: Missouri EV Charging Stations

With abundant EV charging options, enjoy a carefree drive while secretly singing along to the latest Taylor Swift hits.

  • EV charging stations are located approximately every 100 miles along Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Kansas City and Interstate 44 from St. Louis to Rolla, into Oklahoma.

  • Heading down Interstate 55 toward the Bootheel area offers fewer EV charging station choices, but with careful planning and mindful driving, you will soon consume some Memphis jazz and barbecue.

  • Interstate 49 from Rolla provides EV charging stations in Rolla, Nevada, Harrisonville and Peculiar, ensuring you arrive on time and ready to enjoy a Kansas City sporting event.

  • Continuing up Interstate 35 toward Des Moines, Iowa, you'll find EV charging stations in Cameron and Bethany.

  • While Interstate 29 toward Omaha, Nebraska lacks a charger directly on the interstate north of St. Joseph. If needed a short detour to Nebraska City ensures a safe arrival at the Omaha Public Zoo.

Knowing you can effortlessly drive your EV along all of Missouri's interstate highways allows you to focus on the destination, not how to feed your steed.

Utilizing Free Missouri EV Charging Stations

Missouri's museums and botanical gardens offer free EV charging while you enjoy the exhibits.

You can also find EV charging stations in grocery store parking lots and at local electric company headquarters.

Combining EV charging with an event is a fantastic way to prepare for the drive home while saving some green.

Charging at Missouri Soldiers Memorial Museum, St. Louis, Missouri

In St. Louis, the Missouri Soldiers Memorial Museum, St. Louis Botanical Gardens, and the St. Louis Art Museum all offer free ChargePoint Level 2 chargers.

  • Explore the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park we added approximately 24% or 70 miles to our EV using the ChargePoint Level 2 chargers.

The Kansas City Nelson Atkins Museum of Art provides free Level 2 EV charging in their parking garage, making it easy to enjoy the art while replenishing your vehicle's range.

  • You will need a ChargePoint account to start the charging session.

Stop by a grocery store to admire some parking lot flattened pizza art while utilizing a free Level 2 EV charging station.

  • The grocery parking lots I have used are just plug and play, no account required.

I have utilized the local Ameren Missouri office parking lot EV charging station while meeting friends for lunch or dinner.

Be creative and take advantage of charging opportunities while exploring exhibits, meeting friends or refilling your pantry. It's a great way to replenish the juice and save some bucks for ice cream.

Areas Lacking Missouri EV Charging Stations

EV charging has improved significantly, but southern Missouri remains underserved. To be fair, this is rural land, and the demand for charging stations is lower compared to the rest of the state.

Scenic Highway 19, stretching from Salem to Winona, then highways 60 & 63 to West Plains or highway 60 east to Popular Bluff is a charging desert.

  • Hopefully, we'll soon be able to drive US Highway 60 from Springfield to Poplar Bluff with convenient charging stops along the way.

Blue Bird Eye View on MissourEV Charging

Overall, Missouri's EV charging network provides easy access to museums, state parks, sports venues, fishing spots, and canoeing adventures.

As metropolitan areas continue to expand their EV charging stations, both quick visits and long-term stays become more convenient.

Searching for morels will soon be more about finding the perfect fungus rather than worrying about electrons, as rural gas stations and grocery stores install more EV charging stations for adventure seekers.

Driving along the interstates and major highways offers charging opportunities every 100 miles or less, ensuring you can travel with ease.

We live in a wonderful state that is expanding its EV charging footprint, granting EV drivers the freedom to explore the open road without concern.

Jump in, dial in some Steeley Dan and enjoy your EV road trip down Missouri’s wonderful electric highway.
