Gettin’ Juiced: The Kia EV6 NACS Charging Adapter

As EV Road Trip Specialists we follow a proven road trip planning process.

Our color-coded United States atlas offers a great overview of available adapters by state.

However, sometimes that’s not enough—having access to the Tesla Supercharger network as a backup can be a real lifesaver.

EVery 2022-2024 Kia EV6 Should Have One

Kia does not provide a free NACS adapter to early EV adopters, thus I purchased the Kia NACS adapter from KiaStuff and it arrived within a few days. The cardboard shipping box was sturdy but bulky—not ideal for storing the adapter in the car.

NOTE: I was hesitant to buy a third-party adapter. I want Kia’s full backing in case any issues arise.

To store the adapter, I bought an Aproca hard-shell case from Amazon. It fits the adapter and paperwork perfectly.

I carefully cut out the mesh on the left side of the lower half, allowing the NACS adapter to nestle snugly into the cavity.

Storing the Kia NACS adapter in your frunk provides easy access and keeps your floorboard clutter-free.

Tesla Charging Cabinets

Tesla is currently upgrading its charging cabinets from V3 to V4.

As a non-Tesla driver, I see two key advantages of V4:

  • Faster charging speeds

  • Built-in NACS adapter support

Since the rollout to V4 will take time, most of my Telsa charging will still be on V3 cabinets.

Important Notes:

  • V3 cabinets have shorter cables that may not reach all EV charge ports

When backing in, I had no issues connecting the cable. Following the Kia NACS adapter instructions made for a stress-free charging experience.

Connecting the Adapter

1: Firmly grasp the NACS adapter

2: Connect the Tesla cable to the NACS adapter

3: Connect the NACS adapter to your CCS1 charge port

4: Activate the session in the Tesla app

Charging Speeds & Cost

One major difference between the Kia EV6 and Tesla vehicles is the electrical architecture and charging cost.

Kia uses an 800V architecture, while Tesla uses 400V

  • Bottom line: slower charging is better than no charging at all

Tesla chargers are more expensive for non-Tesla drivers

  • A Tesla charging membership lowers the per-kWh cost, but it may not be worth it if you’re only using it as a backup

Using the Tesla App with the Kia EV6

Setting up my Tesla charging account was quick and easy.

I entered my vehicle make, model, and payment info—and I was ready to go.

Tapping Find a Charger brought up a map of available chargers.

Selecting a charger displayed details like:

  • Availability

  • Charging speeds

  • Usage fees

  • Address

  • Nearby amenities

Once at the charger, I connected the Kia NACS adapter and tapped Charge Here.

Moments later, “Charging Started” echoed across the parking lot.

Standardizing charge ports is long overdue. With the NACS port, everyone’s charging experience improves.

That said, I don’t plan to use Tesla Superchargers as my primary provider—but more power to you (pun intended) if you do!

  • Non-Tesla drivers pay more per kWh

  • Charging speeds are generally slower than Electrify America or EVgo

Still, the real advantage for EV road trippers is choice.
There will come a time when this alternative keeps your journey going.

So go ahead—use this resource to extend your EV road trips and explore this amazing country.
